I updated the Internet Football Pool site with a message stating my reasons why the site will not be up and running this year. It really was a tough decision to make, but I think it was the right one.IFP Players and anyone else can write comments and questions here instead of emailing me directly.
Posted by drake at July 31, 2002 11:40 AMwas your pool an asp script.....or cgi.Anyway, you should make it public for someone else to run.least they will appreciate your hard workthank you for your time

Posted by: mike of the jsu on August 1, 2002 03:56 AMI'll miss the IFP because of the extra feature of seeing how you rank among the masses. However, if you want to just run a free office pool for your own group, you can't go wrong with commissioner.com. Posted by: pat on August 1, 2002 12:59 PMHi Don!I just want to tell you how much I've enjoyed your pool over the past five years. NFL Nuts was a great bunch of people and I'll really miss them all this year but you must do what you must do. I know that everyone on my team is very grateful for the time and effort that you've put in on this website over the years...making improvements for us each year. And you can just ignore those fools who are so critical of your desire to be paid for all your hard work. I am ashamed of their rude reaction to your news. This website was like a dream... impossible that it's been free of any charge whatsoever for five years that I know of but maybe even longer. Anyway, I'm going to keep the URL in my Favorites and will check back next season. In the meantime, I hope you have a great NFL season... go ahead and win your Fantasy League!!! And I'll say Goodbye to all my friends in NFL Nuts and wish you all the best of luck this season too!!! It's been great fun!!! I'll miss you all and I'll miss this place!!!
Posted by: Sheila Dickie on August 1, 2002 04:05 PMDon I want to thank you for running a very nice pool in the past years. Sheila its been fun with the NFL Nuts. Don if you come back with the pool next year, Im willing to pay a fee. I see you have a few posting on here with comments that show they dont have the common sense to know it takes money or funding from somewhere to put on such a site. Time is another thing that is devoted. So those with a negative view, why dont you trying putting on a pool such as what Don had and see what it takes to really do it. Hope to see you next year Don
Posted by: Carleton Reed on August 1, 2002 04:48 PMDon, Thanks for the years of enjoyment and I do look forward to your return next year. Please disregard the adolecent tantrums as they do not reflect the opinion of anyone who has family responsibilities or other interests other than supporting the freeloaders that berate you. You do supply a product (otherwise they wouldn't be so upset) and as with any other product you are ENTITLED to compisation for your expertise. Drive on, our pool will survive until you return.
Posted by: Mike's Madness on August 1, 2002 05:36 PMDon, will miss the great IFP this year. I was looking forward to it. Sheila, e-mail me at jbradfi@thelakes.net and keep in touch. Let me know if you find a pool this year. Renewed my ticket subscription this year. Will miss the good picks and good luck to you this year. I did find a place though if I remember, it's a local site at www.lasvegas.com Check back in a few weeks to see if they will be hosting this year. I may go with them for my picks. Take care. Joe
Posted by: Joe on August 1, 2002 10:11 PMDon, Thanks for all your dedicated hard work in making this a fun place to hang these past few years. Your efforts have been appreciated and I hope that life will allow you to re-instate the IFP at a later time. You deserve a standing ovation. See ya webtv group!
Posted by: Jim Lohr on August 1, 2002 10:59 PMThis is truly a sad event to see this great football pool go away. I don't think I'll be able to find one that equals this. What's worse, I actually won one of those coveted squeezy-ball things last year. Unbeknownst to me, my son threw it in the yard and I ran over it with my lawnmower. I was hoping to replace it this year, but I guess I'll have to wait. All the best to you... thanks so much for your hard work. I must admit that I hope you either reconsider your decision, or consider allowing someone else to pick this up and run it. This is just too great a site to let it go. I'd be willing to pay YOU a fee to run my pool. I don't think I like that other site so much. It's just not as user friendly as yours.
Posted by: TomZ on August 2, 2002 11:18 AMHi All!!I checked out the web site, www.poolhost.com and it seems to pretty damn good and its free!Has anyone else tried it out?Take a look!http://www.poolhost.com

Posted by: Jim on August 3, 2002 02:49 AMDear Don, I respect your decision to do what is best for you and your family by not investing the time, energy and expense needed to run the pool. I say this with a huge smile ... I can't walk away from this message board without telling you how very much I enjoyed your pool. It was my absolute favorite pool. You did a wonderful job ... and I appreciate all of the time and effort you put into it in the past. Thank you! Sincerely, Deborah
Posted by: Deborah on August 3, 2002 06:53 AMDon, Since you are the president of Drake Consulting, that means that you could afford to hire someone to update the website instead of shutting it down. All that shows us (the players) is that you aren't very good at deligating people. Don, this is a great site and a great way to get people to know who you are, use it to your advantage, many people are disappointed. I alone referred over 100 people to this pool site, so I feel a little hurt becuase they are going to come back to me with a lack of trust in my opinion now. Thanks, and please reconsider your actions.

Posted by: MOMO on August 5, 2002 06:43 PMJust wanted to thank you for running IFP. I have been a member for 5 years. I did much better (statistically) when there were less members. :-) I fully understand your need to move on. Frankly, I was surprised it lasted as long as it did. Thanks for everything and don't listen to the "sour-grape" folks.
Posted by: Jannette on August 5, 2002 06:55 PMDon -Thanks for the great site. I've played for the last three years, and during football season watching my standings each week on your site was an obsession for me and a large group of friends. I must say I was disappointed when I came to footballpool.com today to get set up for this season only to see your message, but I respect your decision and thank you for putting up such an outstanding site.
Posted by: Jeff on August 5, 2002 07:24 PMGod fucking dammit!! Every year, we run this football pool and talk shit. This year you pussies get a reprieve. You fags lucked out. Drake, every damn week, you sent a newsletter to everyone here, begging us to not miss out on the pool and such. This is how you thank us for our devotion and dedication to the game that we love. Well, on behalf of everyone in the Merkin Jones Club...FUCK YOU.
Posted by: The Merkin Jones Club on August 5, 2002 10:57 PMDon, Thanks for all your hard work and dedication to running a great site. I've played for a few years and stayed in the same groups. Made many friends from this site. Good Luck in all you do and thanks again for providing the best "pick 'em" site on the web.P.S. Ignore all those "cheap" comments from people complaining. They have no idea of what it takes to run a site like you did, especially for free. Again, my best to you.
Posted by: Dean Cerato on August 5, 2002 11:09 PMDon,Thanks for all the years of fun and your dedicated hard work in making this a great and friendly place to meet new friends and show off skills or lack of skills in picking the winning teams each week. Good Luck to you and thank you for the 5 years.Hope to see you here again, disregard the ingrates and their comments.C ya! ! !
Posted by: Silvio "Xeneize" on August 6, 2002 03:25 PMEnjoyed very much participating in the pool last year,a unique challenge to be in a pool that size and watch as with each loss and win how much the difference in the standings it made, a truly fun time. A question though, any suggestions on where a person could find a similar FREE pool to participate in. I have 2 lotteries that I play for money, but a free pool is fun too , I await a reply and THANK YOU for your work last year..!!!!!!

Posted by: Mark Gerstel on August 7, 2002 05:49 AMHello,I am sorry to hear that you will not be running the pool this year. I have used your pool to run our competition at home and will miss your layout and accuracy. Not to mention how much fun it was to compare how well (or how badly) I did against the other pool players. Good luck with your endeavors, and please keep my email address 'just-in-case' you decide to start it up again next year.Thank you for all your previous seasons!Brenda Hardwick

Posted by: Steve Wiles on August 7, 2002 10:01 AMI am really sorry to see you are discontinuing your football pool. I especially liked it because of its simplicity to operate and its comparison lists. Ours was a family competition which even included youngsters, like under 10, who had as much fun beating us adults as we did with each other. I do hope you will restart it with the coming year and please let me know if you do!

The only feature missing is a global ranking of all the teams. If you join ask for this feature to be added (they said they would consider it). Sibling Rivalry ranked 17th at the end of last year. Let's see how you stack up.
Posted by: Ron on August 8, 2002 01:39 PMDon, I understand where you are coming from concerning time issues. If you would like, I would be willing to run the football pool for you at no cost to you. I have enjoyed your site for years and really hate to see you lose your dedicated people to other sites just because of time restraints. I have knowledge of several languages as well as 3 years experience building and maintaining websites. Feel free to email me if you would like for me to keep the pool running for everyone. I am sure they would be pleased to be able to continue their pools here at IFP. Sincerely, Rob Smith

To the fucking pricks at the "Merkin Jones Club" eat shit. Who needs a bunch of selfish racist bigots in the IFP anyway! "mike of the jsu" you need to spend more time with your spelling and learn to use a period every once in a while than worry about a football pool. I am dizzy after reading your garbage. Get your Mom to proof read your shit or even someone who has better than a kindergarden education. So have another beer and shut the fuck up!To the rest of you people who cry more than my 3 month old. Wah fucking Wah!!! Go to another site you a-holes! Posted by: Brian on August 13, 2002 06:58 PMI was willing to come out here and not leave a comment until I saw some crap about winning the Fantasy League. You truly are playing in a fantasy league if you think your going to win. With that being said, The Merkin Jones Club, zach, Joe (posted 08/03/2002), pat (posted 08/01/2002) & mike of the jsu - you are all complete and utter douche-bags. You obviously haven't the slightest fucking idea what you are talking about. The IFP didn't cost you a nickel. As Don said in his posting, the site had become cost prohibitive. What is he supposed to do? Fund it out of his own pocket so you have another use for your computer during football season other than crackin’ a fresh one off to gay porn ?

Posted by: Clay on August 17, 2002 11:57 AMThanks for all your time Don, I hope you don't take any of the negative comments posted here to heart, its amazing how many bottom feeders there are in this world that expect free things to just keep rolling their way. I would happily pay to access your site next year. It is also amazing how foul mouthed and illiterate some people can be, the lack of intelligence shines through their words.Good luck on your year off and hope to see you next year.

Posted by: Bonnie on August 17, 2002 11:14 PMReading some, some, of these e-mails, I've got an idea: how about a resume cross referal deal where each weekly participant has to provide a listing of services that they can provide over the internet. Like, I am the single greatest Exel spreadsheet master on this planet (really). Here are my picks and here's the skill set I have to offer, which can be provided to you over the internet... This way, Don gets business, John gets business, xxx gets business, and we all get picks! Food for thought.

Posted by: TMacD on August 18, 2002 05:07 PMWe were looking forward to getting the e-mail from you saying it's time to play. When we couldn't wait any longer we came to your site and found out the sad news. We played as a family in a smaller pool with some of my brothers co-workers. It was always fun when our seven year old daughter beat the adults. While looking at standings we even found a long lost friends name from almost 30 years ago and have become reaquainted. (sp?) Anyway, thanks for all of your hard work. How did you do it alone? Enjoy your family and your time off from your site. Good luck on your consulting business. The Bognars

Posted by: Joe on August 26, 2002 02:47 PMYeah, Joe, I'm sure a Casino site won't spam me. You expect all the service for free?!? Was Drake running a charity?!? Get real!Anyway, I've checked some of the other pool sites people have posted here. You can change your name on each post, you can say something different each time you post, and you can compliment Drake, but we can still see that you are spamming this board. When the email address is blank or sends us to your site, it is makes it really obvious. We are aware of your site now, please stop spamming.
Posted by: Jerry on August 29, 2002 03:57 PMWell, I ended up going with poolhost. Only time will tell how it will work out. Anyway, I was part of a great trash talking group here know only as "INDIANA" I have managed to contact a few of my old roomies and they should soon be joining me at poolhost. If anyone here is interested in joining, it is a public group called "GNATTS" over at poolhost. It is not for everyone, as there is sure to be some very rude and vulgar comments from time to time. It could be a way to make some easy cash if you really know football. I will be offering a $50 cash prize for the season grand champion and a small weekly prize of some sort. If you have any questions feel to contact me at jerry_stuthers@hotmail.com

Posted by: busker on September 5, 2002 05:06 PMI stopped by to find your site this year is down. Really Bummed. It was a great time last year but if I were doing it I would change the point system so its easier for the average user to understand. Something strictly points driven by game and less confusing. Maybe allow betting money (fake money) on games. Users like that. Looking for greater things next year. To those who left those aweful hateful messages all I can say is spend the money and put up a better site or shut up, Grow up! the man says he cant do it this year so let it go and stop being a baby.Best of luck with the new business and next season.

Plus, and THIS got to me the most, I got spammed by a pool member within the first week! Posted by: Kevin M. on July 10, 2003 05:24 AMI have tried poolhost.com and its ok and probably will go back this year if Drake isn't back with footballpool.
I, like most of the comments posted here, realize that running this site is time consuming and expensive, not to mention the prizes you have sent(although I didn't receive one). All that most unselfish people would ask from you is your time while we do the financial part...
Anyone agree? I too would pay for the site to be up and running... by Drake
Debbie,
I'd pay to see it back. Poolhost was okay. But this was tons better. Watching football just isn't the same especially after not having Drake here running things. Hope I'll see it back in a month or so. Now that I've got my own place and things are great again.

Posted by: Heather on August 15, 2003 12:06 PMHey if you want a fun pool to play and you can afford to spend a little cash,
then try www.ultimatesurvivalpool.com
It's an NFL Survival pool.
$125 could win as much as $250,000.
Only 3000 people will be able to join before it closes. Pretty good odds to win $250,000.
Also, If you refer the winner to the site, you can still win $5,000.
I have run the pool off line for 5 years and our people really like it. I thought more people would enjoy it if we went on line with a bigger prize.
It's not for everyone, but if you want to give it a try you might like it.
Check it out at least.
Thanks
Dan

Can you say GAMBLING?!? That's not LEGAL!
Someone should report you!
Why are you advertising on here anyway? The is for IFP!
Posted by: kevin on August 20, 2003 04:13 PMToo bad...
Thanks Drake. Really enjoyed it while it lasted. Me and my friends are going to miss it... and not because of the prizes, just for the heck of it. Really hope you reconsider.
You people are such a bunch of fags. Oh please Drake bring the pool back. Please... Please... Please.. I cant live without your brilliant Free football pool.
Wah! Wah! Wah!.... Oh please drake If you come back I would be willing to pay 5 whole dollars and maybe you could increase the prize from a T-shirt to a day at the spa so I can go with my other girl friends.
Its a football pool. Get over it... Its gone. Been gone for over a year already. Move on. Get a life. Why are you even posting here anymore?
You all sound like a bunch of old women in an office. Grow some balls and find a bookie already. It will be more exciting then the stupid football pool.
You also all sound like a bunch of cheap old laidies who wont join a pool because its gonna cost more then five bucks. If thats the biggest concern then you should find a better job, and not a better football pool.
There are tons of pools on the internet that are good to be in. they just might cost a couple of bucks. You are all a bunch of loser hicks.
If you want as close to a free football pool as possible, try officefootballpool.com. It has tons of games and is like 2 bucks a person.
Btw...If Drake was so great, why doesnt he just give one of you loyal users the sofware to borrow so you can keep it going until he come back. I bet he doesnt even look in here anymore. Stop crying to him already!
Bye
Posted by: Ball Buster on August 20, 2003 05:47 PMDrake, I add to the other posters (not the morons): I am willing to pay a fee if you only open up the IFP again!
Posted by: FinerNiner on August 22, 2003 10:40 PMI too am willing to pay for IFP, if your listening.

Posted by: Miami1972 on August 24, 2003 08:56 AMWas hoping to see this site up & running for the 2003-2004 season. I miss playing the football pool on this site. This site is the BEST!
Posted by: Gloria on August 24, 2003 01:15 PMwww.poolhost.com is $0 to join and play
Posted by: kevin on August 24, 2003 02:24 PMPoolhost.com is fine if you want to read a bunch of bullsh#t. I am not a prude, but I get sick of the teeny-bops and their (c)rap-speak. The management of Poolhost doesn't seem to care, so I quit last year.
Posted by: Finer_Niner on August 26, 2003 05:36 PMI avoided the public message board and posted on the pool message board instead. The Canada versus USA page was kind of funny though but got a bit raunchy.
Posted by: kevin on August 27, 2003 03:59 AMYou quitter! I could have taken your place, you idiot as you never thought of any other alternative way to keep it going! Tough shit!
Posted by: Todd on September 5, 2003 05:39 AMDrake, I don't know you but I want to express my profound appreciation for you years of making this site the only place that I'd consider setting up my pool. I completely understand the difficulties involved in trying to manage a popular free site on the web and still have an a personal life. Easy? It ain't.
That said, if the issue is money I wish you'd just said something. It SLAYS ME - the number of Internet sites that shut themselves down because of no cash - even though they never asked for cash! I'd have GLADLY PAID to PLAY - no question.
In any case, I'll keep you link and check back next season.

Posted by: joefire, himself on September 5, 2003 12:33 PMPoolhost.com Stinks. It sucks!
Its all about points and wins. They have it jacked up. The set up is crappy.
Posted by: D on September 16, 2003 10:59 AMI meant the set up has it where you win only by points etc, not by wins.
Drake, I am praying and thinking about you. I still have this linked bookmarked for the 2004-05 season just in case.
Please respond andl et us know what is going on.
Posted by: D on September 16, 2003 11:02 AMI run http://www.playthepool.com , I fully understand WHY he shut the pool down. I have a fully automated site that I wrote and is easy to manage. It is 100% free. FREE. I have over 4500 members playing actively. One season I decided to try to charge a small membership fee to help cover the cost of the site. Whether you know it or not PEOPLE ARE CHEAP like unbelievably cheap. You offer something for FREE and they flock to it, the second you say $5 lifetime membership they FLEE(I got 2 signups paid(refunded them after), when its free I get about 1000 signups a season). So I understand why he shut it down, and tell to you the truth his life is probably better because of it. No one appreciates anything on the internet, they just expect these services to be here and to not have to pay. I am FREE again but I do have a DONATION area, and you know what I have received $36.43 in 6 months(thank you for those who contributed). That shows me no one appreciates anything that is given to them. If you want a FREE no frills, no popup ad football pool that is simple come to http://www.playthepool.com .

Posted by: Jack on August 24, 2004 01:17 AMHi Drake,
Just wanted to know the Postal Peons are lost without you. We've played other pools for a couple of years, and yours was still the best! Was hoping you might come back........someday.
Best, Jannine aka Brownsbabe
Don,
I have to agree with most of these posts. This site was the best I have used and wish it was back. Any chance that you may revive the site?
Thanks for hosting.
