Shuttle Update

According to monitoring devices on the shuttle, the temperature on the left side increased by 60 degrees Fahrenheit during five minutes, while during the same period, temperatures on the right of the shuttle went up by only 15 degrees.

NASA has confirmed that human remains of all seven astronauts have been recovered.

In a desperate move to collect as much information as possible, NASA is asking the public to send any pictures and videos they might have for review in the shuttle investigation. An anonymous FTP server has been setup for the uploading of the media.

Iraqis Call Shuttle Disaster God's Vengeance

Why would The Wall Street Journal include this sentence in Kalpana Chawla's bio??

On her only other spaceflight, in 1997, she and the crew were blamed for mistakes that sent a science satellite tumbling out of control.

This may be the most unsubstantiated allegation by WSJ and some TV networks. They may be either sexist or xenophobic or both. To suggest that the shuttle disaster had anything to do with the astronauts error is absurd knowing what we know at this very early stage.

what a shame! racism always raise its ugle head when others feel a need to be superior! be it against color, origin, or sex. It is absurd to think that a super power country as America would have it space program made decisions based upon the advice of one individual. The New York Times should be classify with the likes of "Trash News" if they feel justified in printing that peice of junk in the time of sorrow for the family member and the nation as a whole.

Sorry about my error in my previous e-mail. the news in question should be the wall street journal not the NY times.

If acceptable, I'd like to post the folowing two excerpts from the New York Times (with my capitalization, for emphasis)and solicit any pertinent comments:

Shuttle's Chief Puts Pained, Steely Face on Shared Trauma (EXCERPT)
By DAVID BARSTOW
New York Times
HOUSTON, Feb. 3
“Today he seemed almost to go out of his way to take responsibility for any tragic consequences of flawed decisions made by dozens of engineers and technicians. The quality was apparent in his response to a question about which NASA official had signed off on an internal analysis concluding that no serious damage was inflicted on the shuttle by debris that broke loose from the external fuel tank on takeoff.
"The person with the authority to judge whether it represents a risk or not, ultimately, is the chairman of the mission management team," Mr. Dittemore said. "However, I'm the accountable individual. ANYTHING THAT HAPPENS AT THE MISSION MANAGEMENT TEAM, I AM MADE AWARE OF and it's my personal commitment that I don't do anything that would jeopardize the crew or the vehicle."

Debris Is Now Leading Suspect in Shuttle Catastrophe Inquiry (EXCERPT)
By JOHN M. BRODER
New York Times
February 4, 2003
"As early as 1997, a NASA engineer warned that hardened foam popping off the Columbia had damaged tiles protecting it from re-entry temperatures.
Last October, a piece of foam from the external tank attached to the shuttle Atlantis broke loose and hit the skirt of a solid-fuel booster rocket. The craft was not damaged and it did not affect its flight.
Mr. Dittemore also addressed reports that some NASA officials had dissented from the engineers' report about the debris strike and said it was potentially a more serious problem. He said that NASA encouraged such dissent and THAT THERE MIGHT HAVE BEEN PEOPLE IN THE ORGANIZATOIN WHO RAISED ALARMS, BUT AS SHUTTLE PROGRAM MANAGER HE HAD NOT HEARD THEM.
"THEY WEREN'T BROIUGHT TO MY ATENTION," he said.
